Quadrilogy possible miss?

In an earlier post Anthony referenced two of the best action quadrilogies. (Die Hard VS Lethal Weapon) I got thinking and if we are sticking to just straight hardcore action movies i would have to concur with my friend that the LW flicks probably have the overall better bang for the bullet.

But, should we take into account some other movies that were fortunate enough (or whored out enough- see "Land Before Time") to reach that fourth segment i believe it is only fair to consider the following for best quadrilogy.

(In no particular order)
Indiana Jones
Aliens
Lethal Weapon
Die Hard

There was one or two others i could think of but for lack of an argument in support i will leave out those that are just plain hard to defend (The Mummy)

Looking at these movies as a package deal it is a hard choice as each has their distinct high and lows. Indiana Jones is more of a "pick you fav" minus the most recent installment, my personal favorite being Last Crusade. Then again have it is displayed with the Aliens series with "Aliens" on top (at least in my book) and the last one definitely coming up a little short.

Looking to examine these all as a whole i think that Indiana Jones still has the top award in the category . There is something about this series that plays to each little boys heart and fantasies. It incorporates just the right amount of humor (sometimes bordering on slap-stick) as well as well scripted action scenes and a certain ability that allows these movies to be watched again and again, and not just once a decade.

On a final aside Die Hard with a Vengeance is my favorite of any of these flicks. For just the shear fact that it was one of Jeremy Irons last decent major release movies and also just the duo of Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson running around NYC having a pissing match almost the entire way is somewhat endearing.

  1. I would agree that Indiana Jones is prob the best quadrilogy of all time... I was comparing LW and DH because they seem to run such parallel arks, and are very equal... so I think it could be fun to compare. The sheer strength of the first 3 makes it almost no contest.

How about an 8 part movie marathon that ends in a group discussion where we settle the debate once and for all? Sounds epic.

  2. Also, great call on the Aliens quadrilogy. My personal preference is Alien, but I love how the series chose to completely change the format up.

Imagine how much better sequels could be if they did genre-swapping like James Cameron did when he took Ridley Scott's suspense-thriller and turned it into an action flick.

I wonder what other movies could do with a sequel in a different genre... hmmm, top 5 list?

  3. I think a that an 8 part movie marathon would be an amazing group activity. Not only would it get us all together to watch some decent flicks, but it could spark ideas and talking points for later postings.

  4. Just a question, is it possible to still refer to the Indiana Jones movies as a trilogy? I mean, can't we just forget the forth movie and go on living in bliss?

  5. i have to argue that Indiana jones 4 was better than DH4 or LW4...... IJ4 just couldn't live up to its 3 predecessors.

  6. My order of the 4th release between Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, and Indiana Jones:
    Die Hard>Lethal Weapon>Indiana Jones

Little side note, if we are watching all four of the Die Hards and Lethal Weapons...plan to have 16hrs 25mins set aside.

  8. I have to back Arnold on this one, well kinda. Both really sucked, its just that IJ4 killed a piece of my childhood. LW4 just killed off some of my brain cells.

  9. I have to say that if I had to watch just the first two of any of these quadrilogies it would definatly be the Aliens movies. Its just unreal how bad the last two sucked.
