The Eternal Question

I haven't been able to stop thinking about this... which movie quadrilogy is better: the Die Hards, or the Lethal Weapons?

I think that the quick answer would be Die Hard... but are you sure?  I'm leaning towards the cop-buddy-drama.

The first movies in each series are fantastic... it's a push.  The last movies in each are an abomination before man, so that is also a push.  The 3rd Diehard has a distinct advantage over the 3rd LW, if only for the sign in Harlem at the beginning.  I think the turning point for the matchup is the 2nd movie.  Lethal Weapon knocks the sequel out of the park wheras Diehard 2 made me wish I was dead.

I think this comparison would be easier to make if I had seen these movies within the last 10 years.

  1. Wow, I'd have to go Lethal Weapon here. The cop-buddy-ness of LW has been often imitated and rarely duplicated as well. In my opinion Live Free or Die Hard crushed LW4. But the first 2 LWs were good enough to pull up the slack. Plus Mel Gibson rocks the sick 80's feathered doo...one of the few good things to come out of the 80's.

  2. Dan-

I have to say both series are a push, if you tally it by the number of good movies out of four i say its a dead tie.
Die hard- 1 and 3 were awesome, 4 being mediocre, definitely trying to grab the new age of fans..

LW- 1,and 2 AWESOME. 3 sucked 4 once again mediocre, bringing on chris rock to become edgy.

so i believe it all comes down to the catch phrases.

Die hard- "yippee ky ay motherfucker"
LW- "i'm getting to old for this shit."

Die hard hands down winner. ( i'm not old yet)

  3. I actually started to ironically quote that Danny Glover catchphrase in my early teenage years. Edge: Lethal Weapon.

  4. ok, just throwing this out there, noticed this the other day when Lethal Weapon II was on TV. Theres a scene in the end where they discover that the bad guys are smuggling a bunch of $1,000 bills. I thought to myself, "shit, didn't think there were $1,000 bills.

Looked it up, they've been out of print since the 1940's. It would be impossible to have that many $1,000 bills, or even to use them without being suspicious. Where am i going with this?

LW2 is ballsy enough to say "hey, US Treasury, suck on this!" I mean sure Die Hards open about its "kick-ass-ed-ness", but Lethal Weapon seems to be a little more subtle about how much it wrecks house. Don't underestimate LW
